1. a) the action or process of cementing, or producing cohesion. b) the state of cohesion thus produced.
2. Metallurgy. a process in which two substances are heated in contact for the purpose of bringing about a chemical change in one of them, as when iron is heated in powdered charcoal to form steel by chemical combination with the charcoal, or when glass is heated in sand to form some kinds of porcelain.
